Frequently Asked Questions

We want you to be well informed and have confidence in your relationship with us. Review some common questions below.

What is IM investing?
IM Investing (also called IMobile Invest) is a digital wealth management program of Canon Capital Investment Advisory. Institutional Intelligent Portfolios is a trademark of Charles Schwab Co., Inc., and is the software supporting our investment models. What does that mean for you? A team of licensed, experienced investment advisors are reviewing the portfolios and funds – and they are available to help you.

Why should I choose IM Investing?
You have plenty of choices for finance today: from completely self-guided to a personal financial advisor, but it can be hard to get started. IM Investing is for people from all walks of life, with all kinds of investment objectives. We merge the benefits of traditional investment advisors with the power of technology available today.
What sets us apart is our flexibility. You won’t have to research and choose individual securities in your account, but you also won’t have to pay costly fees for binders, meetings, and paperwork that you don’t want or need. Some online services only use their own investment options, with limited call center support; our models have a variety of companies and indexes and we’re always on call with personal service.

What does the name IM Investing mean?
We believe that anyone can start saving for their future – not just the ‘well off’ or wealthy. Through education, spreading financial literacy, and a no-judgment zone approach, we want you to be able to say yes, “IM Investing”!

What is automatic tax-loss harvesting?
When a taxable account (brokerage) reaches $50,000 it is automatically enrolled in tax-loss harvesting. Tax-loss harvesting will sell investments that are down and then purchase a similar investment, offsetting realized investment gains with those losses. Capital gains or losses are only realized at the time of a sale; if the asset class is still within it’s targeted percentage you may end up holding funds with high gains. By selling under or over performers and buying similar ones, you ‘reset’ the cost basis or value in that category. The end result is that less of your money goes to taxes and more may stay invested and working for you.

What does it cost?
We assess .60% of assets under management; that’s about $7.5 per month for an account with about $15,000 invested. If you’re not sure that you need help, it’s always free to talk and see if IM Investing is a good fit for you.

Is there a minimum account size?
The minimum account value for investing is $5,000, but you are able to open an account with a $0 balance. You will answer the investment questionnaire as usual to select a portfolio; however, make sure you input at least $5,000 when prompted in order to proceed to the next page. If you make deposits, say $500/month, your account will remain in cash (with no fees) until it reaches $5,000. At that point, it will be invested in the model you chose and billing will begin.

What investments do you use?
We use Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). These are low-cost funds that seek to track an index. Then, we blend them into different model portfolios so that you can be diversified across multiple investment sectors. If you want to learn more about different investment vehicles, our investment team would love to explain via phone or web conference.

Can I customize my portfolio?
Of course! We have access to over 1300 funds and a licensed team of investment advisors to help you create a model that meets your goals. Please contact us prior to setting up an account.

Why do I need a Schwab login?
IM Investing partners with Schwab to provide an industry-leading online experience that is secure, user friendly, and consistently updated. Schwab is also the custodian of funds in your account, so forms and checks go through them.

How do I move funds in and out of my account?
You are encouraged to connect a bank account at account opening for either a one-time deposit or monthly recurring deposits. Please contact us if you need to deposit a check. Withdrawals can also be processed as a deposit to your bank, or a check to your address.

Can I transfer an account?
You are able to transfer an existing account in to your IM Investing portfolio. Please speak to our team prior to opening an account so that we can help you complete the transfer smoothly.

Is IM Investing a ‘robo-advisor’?
Great question! IM Investing uses Schwab’s robo-advising technology, Institutional Intelligent Portfolios, to provide automation of some features. The algorithm can look at accounts daily and rebalance when you are outside of the target for your model. However, the models themselves and the investments within them are vetted by a team of registered investment advisors.
Large brokerage firms may use limited investment choices or outsource customer service – our personal touch sets us apart. We also believe in educating you, not dictating your choices, so we will take the time to explain the ‘why’ if you have questions.

Is there an app?
